A beautiful spring day greeted our band of 18 (including 4 new members) as we emerged from lockdown. We wandered off the beaten track into remote Hethfelton Woods enjoying the warm spring sunshine and birdsong. After an extensive circuit of the woods where we only encountered two other people but spotted deer, woodpeckers and pheasant we returned to the start point at Hyde Heath Nature Reserve.
Our tour of the reserve commenced with a picnic at the hide before a stroll across the heath encountering more deer and birds of prey. Descending into the woods we gathered some golf balls in the heather (jettisoned from the neighbouring driving range) before encountering some wild ponies in the wetlands.
Our 6 mile stroll to kick off our new weekly programme provided a welcome antidote to lockdown 3!
