Canoeing and camping weekend on the Severn

Fourteen handsome men and women were launched onto the river Severn ... and fourteen returned.

The merry crew ventured to the Royal Hill Inn camp site in Shropshire to set up camp and enjoy an adventure on the river Severn. Well done Mike and Jim for finding an excellent camp site which boasted stunning views, cheap beer and great food at the Royal Hill pub.

The entertainment began with the boats being unloaded from the trailer by a strapping local lad whilst we stood looking at the tattoos writhe over his muscles. The next entertainment was provided by watching each of us trying to get into our boats without getting wet. Colm, or Captain Vogelaugen (thats Birdseye to you non-German speakers) provided the most laughs as he seemed determined to get wet each time he got in and out of his boat.

We set off approx 7 miles up stream of the camp site and had a leasurely row to our lunch stop at Melverley. The pub had long since been abandoned so it was lucky we had all been prepared and had packed lunches stowed away in the water tight barrel. We could not resist visiting the beautiful old church and after a couple of Hail Marys we were back on the water. Thanks to the strong current we needed little effort to get us back to the camp site by early afternoon in good time for a shower before supper.

The following day we set off from the camp site for a 7 mile journey to Montford. Again we were very fortunate with the weather and had a good strong current making easy work for the crews.

Thanks to the organisers and participants for making this such a fab trip. Talk was of the next canoeing trip to take place in France so look out for that one in 2017.

If you are in the area do visit Knockin and go to the Knockin Shop which not only has a humerous name but takes you back in time to an era of Open All Hours.
