Auchnafree Hill – 17th September 2016

Auchnafree hill is, to be quite honest, not the most interesting hill you could choose to climb, being the highest point on the billowing moorland above the Perthshire market town of Crieff.  It is however quite an easy climb, accessed from the Loch Turret dam and it was the destination of one our monthly weekend walks.

The car park next to the dam is accessed by a private road, owned by the water authority.  A Land Rover might have been a better choice of vehicle for this road than a Ford Focus, but hey ho, ten of us gathered there on a beautiful warm early autumn day.  The walk starts flat taking the track that skirts the reservoir, before a right turn is made and a steep climb leads onto the summit plateau of the hill.

The summit cairn can be difficult to find in thick weather, but there was no such difficulty today with such clear visibility.  A pleasant leisurely lunch was taken at the cairn before descending, first traversing the Blue Crags then visiting the Cairn on Choinneachain Hill.

Tea and cake is compulsory on these types of walks, and on this occasion this was kindly provided by Mike, who is resident of Crieff.  Many thanks to Mike and to Douglas for leading this pleasant walk.
