Twixmas weekend away at Trefin Hostel, Pembrokeshire

This was our second Twixmas event at this hostel in the lovely village of Trefin, Pembrokeshire.

A mixture of people attended, some who came last year and some new ones.

Overall the weather could have tried harder and been kinder to us but all the other arrangements went off well and everyone enjoyed the fantastic scenery not letting any wind or rain spoil our Twixmas break.

We met up at Treffgarne on Christmas eve where Sian joined us for a drink before 7 of us did an afternoon walk nearby starting off at Treffgarne gorge andclimbing high up with great views through the mist!!

We descended and walked through Treffgarne village before climbing up onto the other side and passing two impressive rock formations, Poll Carn amd Maiden Castle.

We had slipped and sloshed our way around through very wet and muddy terrain and ths was going to be the pattern for the next few days.

The light just held out for us to get back to the cars and then we drove in convoy to the hostel where we all settled into the warm and cosy surroundings.

Very soon it was off to the village pub for the evening meal which was snug and inviting and the meals on offer suited all our tastes.

The following day, Christmas Day was our walk to Porthgain and Abereiddy.

We started off inland and very soon came across a sheep with its head stuck in a fence.Lecky managed to get to it with difficulty and freed the animal, her good deed for that day.

We continued through fields and very soon the beautiful red brick harbour at Porthgain came into view.

After a short stop for refreshments we braved the elements and climbed up onto the cliff path that led to Abereiddy. This was high up and by now the rain had started and the wind was doing its best to blow us over at times.

We got to Abereiddy, fammous for its blue lagoon where people go coast steering, jumping off the rocks into the water.

In fact some people were walking back from having been in the sea as we approached the lagoon.

We found a sheltered spot for lunch and then continued inland right back to Trefin, opting to deviate from the intended route on the narrower cliff path not wanting to lose anyone over the cliffs.

Back at the hostel refreshments were the top priority whilst we warmed up and dried out.

The drying room at the hostel was really tested in these few days and came out a winner with us being able to have dry clothes, rucksacks etc every day which was such a great help.

Neil H, cooked us a scrummy meal with Christmas pud to follow.

Afterwards we relaxed in the lounge with lots of chatter and much laughter playing games.

Boxing Day was our walk to Abercastle and we were joined by Marie, Rose and Robert D, and it was really great to have their company.

This started off very sunny which was great for the people who hadn't been to this part of Wales before, showing off the true spendour of this area.

Again the mud made it very difficult at times particularly on the narrow up and down coast path but luckily there were no major mishaps.

Part way through we came to Carreg Samson a Neolithic burial chamber where we posed for a few photo's before carrying on to Abercastle a lovely inlet where we had lunch.

We continued on the coast path before making our way inland back to Trefin.

We were all so glad to see the buildings of Trefin village come into view as by this time it was raining and all the mud had taken its toll on our aching legs.

Our guests stayed for coffee and cake and suddenly Dafydd phoned. He had stayed at home with a heavy cold so we were all able to say hello and give him our good wishes which was really nice.

Then we bade our fond farewells to our visitors.

Soon it was pub time again and we had another lovely meal and the conversation flowed in front of the roaring fire.

The last day, Wednesday dawned.A few had a long jorney home so decided to opt out of the walk on offer that day at St Davids.

The rest of us drove there and assembled in the main street where Jim joined us.

It was very sunny but also very windy.

We walked inland to Porth Clais where we had a stop for refreshments and where we said goodbye to Jim as he decided to continue along the coast path.

With the wind behind the rest of us, we walked back along the coast path to St Nonn's church where we sat taking in the sea views.

We then continued to St Davids Cathedral and it's lovely cafe, always a great way to end a walk and in this case a great way to finish off a most wonderful few days away in Pembrokeshire.

Many thanks to everyone who supported this event and it was great to see Gabby and Max join us from other GOC groups for this Twixmas event.

A huge thank you too to Neil H, for his most tasty Christmas Day meal.

This was most definitely a fantastic few days, in a most wonderful area.
