The Usk reservoir

8 Oct 2017 | West Wales, Women Groups

iThe weather forecasters employed their scaremongering tactics yet again in the week leading up to this event, predicting high winds and heavy rain all day long.A few people who took this dire information on board, were put off coming to join us.

As happens so often, on the day, the weather was much kinder to us.We did have a few bits of very light drizzle but that was in between, some long spells of dryness.

13 of us assembled at the reservoir car park, which included 4 newcomers to the group, who, at the end of the walk, and after sampling Colin and John's scrummy cakes promised to return again soon!!

This walk mainly on good paths was ideal in the circumstances. We started with a detour around some repairs/workings and then were quickly back on track beside the reservoir twisting this way and that.It was a bit misty in parts but we did have some really good views too of the surrounding area as we wandered around.

We stopped by a picnic table in the dry, for an early lunch, leaving plenty of room for the scrummy cakes to come later. It was a very civilised affair with Colin and John even providing a lovely striped tablecloth!!

After lunch we continued with a few ups and downs and then veered off track across a green and grassy area where in the distance we could see the car park and our finishing point.

As most of this walk was on good paths and/or through grass, some people remarked that at the end, their boots were cleaner than when they had started--now that doesn't happen very often, does it?!!

No-one could decline Colin and John's kind offer of coffee and cake at theirs, so after a short drive we were spoilt with lashings of tea and coffee to wash down the assortment of delicious home made cakes.

2 of our members, (myself and Neil B,) had had recent birthdays that hadn't been missed by Colin and John, who brought in 2 pieces of cake topped by 2 lighted candles for us to blow out and a chorus of Happy Birthday rang out around the Gwynfe kitchen.

Many thanks for that nice touch.

Great walk, great company and scrummy cake and coffee, now what else is there??!!

Many thanks to Colin and John for all their hard work in making this a most enjoyable day.
