Cornwall GOC

Sunday 9th October 2016.

Holywell Bay.

For those of you who don’t know this part of the world, Holywell Bay is on the north coast of Cornwall between Perranporth and Newquay. It comes as no surprise that today’s ramble encompassed much coastal path and beach walking.

In perfect autumn sunshine 20 of us, including 4 ladies and numerous dogs, travelled from east and west, from Launceston to St Ives converging on the NT carpark at Holywell for an 11 o’clock start.

We walked in a northerly direction on paths, dunes and country lanes and eventually reached the River Gannel, on the outskirts of Newquay. The tidal conditions and still waters added an amazing perspective to the views and many a camera clicked. Some ropes and a rustic swing dangling from an ancient tree added extra excitement for our younger walkers – the little dare devils!

The local beach provided a perfect stop for “relief” and our picnic lunches.

Off again and a beach walk along Crantock Beach, across Pentire Point, and a second breather at Porth Joke. Here the more energetic headed for the sea and one lad actually swam while others paddled. Finally we headed back to the cars on cliff tops grasslands with a glimpse of seal pups resting on Kelsey Head.

This was a perfect walk, the weather was superb and the views stunning. Our leader, Martin gave us a wonderful route and everyone was full of delight for yet another great GOC occasion.
