Broughton Castle Birthday special.

Sunday the 10th June was a lovely morning, a little fresh to start, but dry and soon warming up.

What more could the 26 eager walkers ask for when they assembled outside Broughton Castle in Oxfordshire, ready for a good walk and to celebrate a special birthday.

No, not Prince Phillip, who was 97 on 10th June, but Judy Garland of course, who would have been 96 on the same day.

We headed off accross field paths and soon reached the village of North Newington, before continuing on to the picturesque village of Wroxton.  Here we had our coffee break on the green, accompanied by various ducks and swans on the village pond.

Continuing our journey refreshed, we carried on down a beautifuul valley before reaching Wroxton Mill.  Here, as promised, we were treated to a glimpse of possibly the biggest cock in Oxfordshire, although some size queens said they thought it was merely average.  Picture attached for you to make your own mind up!

Next stop was the village of Shutford where many of us had our picnic lunch on the green, whilst a few snook off for a swift pint in the adjacent pub.

After lunch, more field paths and bridleways took us back to Broughton Castle, where a few more old friends were waiting to join us for tea and cakes in the castle tearooms.

Finally we finished the afternoon with a rousing rendition of 'Happy Birthday'.  Sadly Judy was not with us to enjoy and appreciate the group effort, but I certainly did.  A day to remember!

Much love, Mark. x
