Beinn Dubh (Black Hill) is one of the Luss Hills, one of the lesser mountain ranges in Scotland, rising to over 2000ft in a number of ridges and glens on the west side of Loch Lomond; they are reminiscent of the hills in The Lakes or Wales.

The forecast for the day was mixed with the forecasters not knowing how far west a front would be, but the low cloud of the morning was lifting as 10 of us met at the rather expensive carpark in the conservation village of Luss, and there was promise of a nice day.

The route up the mountain first crosses the busy A82 by a footbridge then climbs steadily up the broad grassy south east ridge of the mountain.  The summit itself is marked by a modest cairn, the summit of Beinn Dudh itself is not very distinct and is over-topped by the higher top of Coire na h’Eanachan at 657m.

We looped around the Head of Glen Striddle over Middle Hill to the minor road in Glen Luss, and this took us easily back to the village.  Some excellent tea and cakes in the café in Luss ensured we weren’t in calorie-deficit for the day….
