Ashburton Dog Fest

6 Feb 2017 | Devon Group

What a Dog Fest, yes 8 dogs attended the figure of eight walk starting from the car park behind the town hall in Ashburton. Mike our leader gathered the other 14 humans together and welcomed the group and provided a quick introduction to Ashburton and the route. The weather was overcast and there was a chill in the air as we started off. We soon warmed up climbing the hill along the Terrace Walk and back down into the outskirts of the town. We followed a lane until we reached a metal gate where we proceeded through fields until Woodencliff Wood where the dogs could roam freely. We followed the river Ashburn along a very muddy path through the woods to Waterleat Farm before crossing the river on a wooden bridge and returning through country lanes to the starting point for our lunch break. Along the way we passed the unusually narrow former woollen mill locally named The Coffin House because of its coffin shaped plan.

After lunch we continued the walk to the west of the town. We paused to admire the thundering river Dart, swollen by all the recent rain, before returning to Ashurton in bright sunshine. An opportunity to explore the streets of this histortic town. Some even adjourned to a local cafe to enjoy a delicious cream tea.
