AOG Quiz Sunday 29th July

As this year's compere of the traditional Sunday evening quiz it was probably best that I didn’t return from leading a 12 mile walk during the day until about 5.45 in the afternoon. Less time alone in my room to contemplate the task ahead was probably an advantage!

As an AOG first timer I was conscious of following in the worthy footsteps of past quiz setter and host Peter Blackburn and did not really know what to expect. Peter’s guidance beforehand about structuring the quiz was most welcome.

Even accounting for the weather which might have driven some people home early on Sunday there was a full house in The Priorslee Lounge with 17 participating teams and several other tables offering encouragement - at least I think that was what they were offering. The dividing wall down the middle of the room was a bit of a challenge but structural alterations were not on the agenda - after all we were doing “Eggheads” not “Grand Designs”.

My brief from the Western Midlands AOG planning group was to deliver “general knowledge with fun, varied levels and subjects”. As the questions required some knowledge of everything from great works of art to the Kardashian family I kept my fingers crossed that I was in the right ball park.

After getting to grips with the portable PA system (with my apologies for the odd feedback squeal) there followed a quick fire 65 questions and mutual marking of the answers to get the countdown to the winners. I was relieved that the spread of the scores was fairly close with the majority of the teams scoring between 51 and 59 and joint winners at that top score. Congratulations to them and many thanks to everyone who joined in and contributed their entry fees to this years nominated charity AllOut.org, which campaigns for LGBT rights around the world.

I would also like to thank sincerely all of you for your positive comments both during and after the quiz which were very much appreciated.
