Despite a fierce finger of Siberian Winter hitting the UK this weekend, 22 of we GOCs, clearly of the more hardened variety, and a very sweet Jack Russell called Charlie, took on Hampstead Heath and all it possessed (well almost), today! Under the excellent guidance of Charles Murray we passed the various Highgate ponds (including a brave swimmer in the Men's Pond), fields, forests, grand houses such as Kenwood, saw great views from Parliament Hill, where Guy Fawkes planned his attack, Golders Green Park with its (rather sad) zoo - including 2 less happy looking Kookaburras in a cramped cage (note to RF to return to assist these little Aussie battlers to their freedom!). The recent mud had fortunately dried somewhat, the forecast rain mostly held off - though enough moisture for some to resort to, God forbid, an umbrella(!!), but the wind remained damned cold, and the sky constantly grey and drab, but despite all of this the company was warm and excellent with lots of good chat, and we continued into a lovely warm pub in Hampstead to sort the world!
Thanks Charles for a most interesting day, and everyone agreed, a really enjoyable day!
Some memories of the day:
Boys at the ready, Parliament Hill
Men's Ponds with lone (brave) swimmer
A break at Kenwood House
Local pond life.....
A lone brave daffodill against the grey sky....
Up to mischief, I am sure!
And they are sober!
Oh no, you said no more pics!
More ponds and life
Poor little Kookaburras, and I'm not talking about the creatures looking in!
It's called an umbrella, hope our Northern members don't see this pic!
