“The Spring has sprung!” The weather was just perfect for our walk from Helston to Porthleven which began beside the large boating lake in Helston. Helston is famed for its world famous “Flora Dance” which takes place round about May 8th each year. No dancers today – just 21 walkers, including 2 ladies, plus 5 dogs – a very good turnout.
We traipsed the off road route through the Penrose Estate walking on well defined footpaths and then took to the cliff trail, round the headland, to Porthleven. We enjoyed stunning views of Loe Pool and the Bar – a strip of raised sand and shingle separating the sea from fresh water.
The lunch break was in the fishing port of Porthleven – one of Cornwall’s little gems, where world renowned chef Rick Stein had recently made his mark by opening another seafood restaurant.
Fortified with our own food and drink, of a more rustic nature, we ambled back through the Penrose estate to our cars. What an extra pleasure it had been to not have had to bother with waterproofs, outer layors for warmth and the likes.
We all agreed we had enjoyed a great walk with excellent company. Our leader was Paul and his local knowledge made this a walk to remember.
