AOG 2021 Saturday around Winchcombe

After wandering through the historic town of Winchcombe the group hit the Cotswold Way to Hails Abbey and the nearby pretty parish church with ancient wall paintings for a coffee stop. On route the group viewed  Damien Hirst’s Manor House which was influenced by the design of the Palace of Westminster and has been clad in plastic since he purchased it over 15 years ago, much to the annoyance of the locals!
After the one significant climb on the walk the group had an early lunch stop to avoid a shower. Sheltering in a 13th c grain store, the owner regaled us with the story of how his father-in-law “borrowed” a plane from the RAF, listed his dog as the co-pilot, landed on the hill, purchased the farm and flew back to base!

The return to base included a view of an impressive new mansion, sweeping views of the surrounding countryside and a close view of Sudeley Castle.
