Starting at Coaley Peak viewpoint just off the Dursley to Stroud road, we set off in a southerly direction along the Cotswold Way, savouring the exceptionally clear views. The panorama included the Severn Valley with its meandering river, the Malvern Hills to the north and the Black Mountains with the Sugar Loaf near Abergavenny to the west.
We stopped to have our packed lunches in the sunshine at Uley Bury, an Iron Age hillfort which had commanding views all around. After lunch, we dropped down steeply and circled Uley village, eventually reaching Owlpen, a small hamlet with an Elizabethan manor house and a medieval, though later restored, parish church. After a brief pause in Uley itself, we began the long ascent through fields and woodland to our starting point, passing through Cockadilly and Nympsfield on the way.
Many thanks to all who came along on the walk and thanks to John & Martin for the report.
