Comments from the Chair

Congratulations to David Millar for starting the club’s History and Culture Group. I am delighted that this alternative to walking in the countryside is now available to our members to enjoy. As a former National Trust Guide, I have always been fascinated by our rich historical background and industrial heritage. I'm sure Group Co-Ordinators can find amongst their members local historians and those with specialist knowledge capable of undertaking this task, which will make a welcome alternative to the usual walks on offer, perhaps with a social gathering afterwards. In addition, I recently joined our Online Group, a friendly, chatty and welcoming addition to our specialist groups, ably run by Martin Gilbraith. I thoroughly recommend it to you. For more details see the Online Group page.

Inclusivity and Diversity: We have come a long way since the dark days of the 1950's. The Wolfenden Report to Parliament in 1957 to decriminalise homosexual acts was not implemented until 1967. GOC was formed in 1974. However, we still live in a world where misogyny, racism and homophobia still exist today. I am pleased to say that GOC welcomes everyone who shares our aims and values.  Our thanks go to Gabby for promoting diversity and inclusion on behalf of the Club

Are You Proud? Over the next few months, Pride events will be taking place across the country. I have already attended Swansea and in June will be in Cardiff. In my diary, I have London in August and Reading in early September. If you are involved in your local 'Pride Day' event, our marketing committee is there to help and support you. They have display material available including some amazing beer mats, a great excuse for you to visit your local pub! See our Pride & Other Marketing Events page  for further information and support.

Annual Outdoor Gathering:  By the time you read this message, I shall be packing my bag ready to travel to this year's Annual Outdoor Gathering, which I understand is now fully booked. Our thanks are due to Aaron Speed and his team for organising this event. I hope to meet as many of you as possible over the weekend, and look forward to seeing you there!
