The Loe at Helston

Cornwall GOC ramble around The Loe at Helston

Sunday 10 July and a promising weather forecast brought 23 walkers and 4 dogs to our starting location in Helston (Home of the famous Flora Dance).

No dancing for us but a delightful almost 10 mile walk along the eastern side of The Loe – a large freshwater lake, many acres in area. Our route was through woodland and along the waterside paths. There were plenty of lovely views through outstanding scenery. Our turnaround point was at Loe Bar – a natural phenomenon where the build up of sand and stone had formed a causeway separating the brackish water in the lake from the sea.

We paid homage to Henry Trengrouse – a memorial noting a daring sea rescue. Trengrouse invented the rocket fired breeches bouy.  We found a sheltered lane to eat our packed lunches and returned to base camp retracing some of our footsteps and some additional byways.

As ever a most successful day, excellent company and plenty of fresh air.  Many thanks to Paul who led the walk at short notice. Next Cornish events are covered by our hosting the AOG in August.
