River Banks, Tewkesbury, Gloucs.

10 Sep 2017 | South Midlands Group

Unusually for a South Midlands event, water was a dominating feature of todays walk.

We met on the banks of the River Severn and 11 hardy walkers, and Lucy the dog, set off along the Severn Way heading in to Tewkesbury, with views of the river and the weir on our left and the Abbey to our right.

We crossed the River Avon at a point close to where footpaths, the Severn Way, Gloucestershire Way and Avon Way all meet up and were soon admiring the view where the rivers Avon and Severn converge.

At this point we followed the River Severn before crossing once again and walking back along the opposite bank for a little while.  We then moved away from the river, accross farmland and green pastures.  There were magnificent old oak trees to admire in the parkland and we even found a rope swing hanging from one of them which Steve was soon eager to test to ensure that it was in good working order.

After a picnic lunch in the village of Forthampton we crossed more fields until we returned to the banks of the river and refreshments at the Lower Lode Hotel.  As we approached we could see showers hanging over the distant hills and a rainbow appeared, lighting up the Abbey in the foreground.

A swift half at the pub before we caught the passenger ferry back accross the river to our start point, minutes before the skies opened and the downpour, that had been threatening all day, finally arrived.

Perfect timing, for a perfect walk with excellant company, and despite so much water, we were all remarkably dry.  Many thanks to John and Guy for leading the walk today.
