The first walk of 2019 by Devon GOC was greeted with a mild day and grey leaden skies. 17 walkers and two enthusiastic dogs met at the P&R Car park in Plympton. Once the pleasantries and quick introduction by Mike F' were over, we headed towards the path that took us under the Devon Express Way - why do Devon main road routes have such grand titles, lol.
Very quickly we were walking the banks of the river Plym, which at low tide is a wide expanse of mud flats. This section of the walk and majority of the remaining walk is very well used by families, walkers, dog walkers, joggers, cyclists etc. enjoying the beautiful, tranquil surroundings. At a junction in the coastal path we took time to take in the view on a sandy beach before heading inland along a quieter track. This track was more wooded and gradually climbed towards Stag Lodge and a view to Drake Memorial Park. We paused here before we retraced our steps and headed to our lunch stop with views to Saltram House, Plym Estuary and Mutley Plain. A quick sandwich and drink break and we headed back to our cars to finish the walk.
After the walk finished we headed back to Mike F's for the Annual Walk Planning Meeting. We were served tea and cakes, this was followed by a quick run down of last years walks and offers to lead walks in 2019. On that note, there are still a few slots free later in the year and it would be fantastic if you can contact Mike with an offer and lead a walk in Britain's most beautiful and diverse county.
