Hazelmere to the Devil's Punchbowl

24 Sep 2018 | Surrey Group

The day started inauspiciously: the weather forecast was ominous threatening heavy rain for the morning, not clearing until about 1400 and there were rail engineering works between Guildford and Haslemere.

However, four brave souls drove through the heavy rain and we waited for the rail replacement buses to arrive, just in case there were any more walkers.  With Robert leading we headed out in light rain but by midday the rain stopped, and we paused at the NT café at Hindhead for restorative coffees.  After walking around the Devil’s Punch bowl with its woodland views lunch took place at Gibbet Hill with amazing vistas to London and the North Downs in bright sunshine.  After such a wet start the walk proved to be very enjoyable and the sandy terrain meant that we encountered little mud.

We concluded with tea and cakes:  Cherry cake from Robert and a fresh ginger, coffee and walnut cake from Gordon.
