Glenfinnan Sleeping Car Meet, 11th to 13th September

14 Oct 2015 | Scotland, Adventure Out Groups

Our early autumn meet this year returned to the railway sleeping car on the railway station at Glenfinnan, with the hope that the settled weather the UK was enjoying throughout the late summer and early autumn would continue.

Glenfinnan is made famous by the curved railway viaduct, which has featured in the Harry Potter films and it is one of the first large concrete structures ever built.  A number of us made the journey there by train as it literally deposits you on the doorstep of your accommodation.

On arrival on Friday, after a glorious journey north on the train, two of us made a dash up the attractive Corbett* of Sgurr an Utha (peak of the udder) to view the famous viaduct from above and for the sunset over the Inner Hebrides.

Saturday was raining a bit, so we opted for a low level walk up Glen Finnan, stopping off for lunch on the bothy at Corryhully.  We were treated to a good view of the 11:00 o'clock steam train to Malliag crossing the viaduct. We all then went for a curry in Fort William.

Sunday was a much better day and we achieved John's primary objective of climbing the nearby Munro# of Gulvain.  The walk was atmospheric with mist swirling around and we have views of quite heavy showers over the hills of Lochaber, but none of them come too near us.  All in all a great weekend in an unusual bunkhouse with some fantastic hills; thanks to John for organising.
