Easter on the Isle of Rum

6 Apr 2016 | Scotland, Adventure Out Groups

This year's trip to the Isle of Rum off Scotland's west coast was in keeping our island theme for Easter trips (last year we went to the Isle of Arran).  Rum is one of the Small Isles – an archipelago of four main inhabited islands in the Inner Hebrides.  Rum is the largest of the four main islands and most mountainous with the Rum Cullin dominating the centre of the island.

We’ve been very lucky with the weather over the last few years but we had the feeling that our luck might be out with gales forecast for Good Friday and storm Kate due to hit the UK later in the weekend.  Fortunately the Cal Mac ferry was running to a limited schedule, missing out its call to Canna but it was going to ‘attempt’ to dock on Rum.

With some mixed weather forecast for Saturday we opted for a walk over to the beach at Kilmory, with some of extending the walk to climb the hill of Orval in deteriorating weather.  The beach is famous for its deer and was featured in the BBC Autumn Watch some years ago.  It has great views over to the mountains of Skye on a clear day.

Sunday was a much better day and a climb was made up Hallival, which is the first hill on the Rum Cullin chain.  With fresh snow on the ground conditions were not ideal so we limited ourselves to the accent of this one hill.  Monday was our last day on the island, some of the group went for a morning cruise on the Cal Mac Ferry to the Isle of Canna, other looking at the seals and otters or walking on some of the lower hills before catching the Ferry back to the mainland.  Three of us extended the trip with a visit to the more populous island of Eigg, dominated by the rock tower of An Sgurr.
