Starting at Dundry village, with its ornate church tower, we set off in a westerly direction in glorious warm sunshine, savouring the exceptionally clear views. The first panorama included all of Bristol with Brunel’s Clifton Suspension Bridge, the two Severn bridges, the mountains of South Wales, the Cotswolds and as far as May Hill in Gloucestershire. We stopped to have our packed lunches in the sunshine on the slopes overlooking the Chew Valley and the Mendip Hills. After lunch, we passed through cornfields and cattle pastures to begin the long ascent to our starting point, passing wild field mushrooms, some as large as dinner plates, on the way. We understand that one of these was destined for the cooking pot, subject to careful identification later on!
