Dorset Group: Golden Cap/Symondsbury 14/05/2017

It was an uncertain start: Dorset GOC don't often visit the far west of our county - a long journey for most of us. But the sun shone throughout the day, and a lucky 13 of us started by tackling the small but distinctive peak of Colmer's Hill, where we were rewarded with great views.

We then headed south over acres of bluebells in order to walk arguably the most dramatic few miles of the Jurassic Coast. From the high point of Thorncombe Beacon we descended to the beach at Seatown for picnics, which gave us enough energy to climb to the top of Golden Cap, the highest point on the south coast. Well worth the effort for one of the best views in England.

This walk was a little longer and harder than the average Dorset outing, but spirits didn't flag too much even with the most challenging bit still to come. We returned to base at Symondsbury via Hell Lane, which lived up to its name - pretty much a river of mud, in spite of the very dry spring we have had so far. Two members even managed it in sandals. I think we all survived, although the leader asked if anybody hadn't, could they please let him know!
