Cotswold Edge and Cam Long Down 7 October 18

Following a day of rain on the Saturday, Sunday dawned bright and sunny. Our starting point, Coaley Peak,  provided a foretaste of things to come; with exceptionally clear views of the Severn Valley with its meandering river, the Malvern Hills beyond and the Black Mountains and the Sugar Loaf near Abergavenny in the distance.

Following the Cotswold Way, we reached Uley Bury, an Iron Age hill fort which had commanding views all around.  We then dropped down steeply and climbed up again to reach Cam Long Down, where we sat down for our picnic lunches.

Descending into the valley below, we passed through fields and small settlements, eventually arriving at Coaley village, with its parish church.  This was mainly rebuilt in the 1850s, but the tower dates from the 15th century. It was noted that the church loo has been “twinned” with a latrine in Bangladesh!

After exploring the church, we started the walk back to the starting point, through fields and woodland, with a long ascent to reach the Cotswold Way.   A Neolithic burial chamber, or long barrow, dating from 2800 BC marked the end of the walk.

Many thanks to all who came along on the walk and helped to make it such an enjoyable day.
