Chipping Campden

On Sunday 13th of May, 24 men and one dog set off from Chipping Campden on a 9 mile hike. The predicted weather had become more hopeful in the previous 24 hours and the day started with mixed sun and cloud, but it certainly did look promising.

The route set out across the Conygree, passing the old Manor House, burnt down during the civil war and on to the hamlet of Broad Campden where the topiary was much admired. We then started up the escarpment where the fine vistas over the surrounding countryside began to unfold.

“One man and his dog went to mow a meadow” (or so we were led to believe), leaving 23 strong men and true to continue the walk.

Spurred on by increasingly fine views and increasingly strong sunshine we reached the village green at Blockley, where welcome shade and the local men’s bowling team, resplendent in their white trousers added to the enjoyment of our lunch stop.

A steep climb followed lunch, just to remind everyone that they weren’t here to have fun: there was the serious business of walking to be undertaken.

More fine views accompanied the return leg, with the tower of Chipping Campden Church visible in the distance  encouraging us homeward.

A stop off at Peter and Brian’s for tea and cakes in the garden in glorious sunshine, whiled away another hour before the harsh return to the real world necessitated everyone wending their way homeward; hopefully happy, healthy and tired.
