Bright Future for London GOC

On Saturday 1st October nine people met at Chris and Andy’s house in Lewisham to discuss the future of the London group following Robert Finlay’s retirement as co-ordinator at the end of September. Attendees included Robert himself, as well as David White, former Chairman of the club.

The meeting was extremely productive, resulting in the formation of a team of people committed to taking London GOC forward and building on the good work that Robert has done the past five years. Our first priority is to continue to organise similar sorts of monthly events that have proved so popular. But we also plan to introduce new types of event and in some months we might have two: an urban walk and a country walk for example. Ideas include: doing the London Loop in stages, orienteering on Hampstead Heath, cycle rides and an introduction to leading walks.

We put together an outline programme for the coming year October 2016 to September 2017, with at least one event in each month. Details will be published on the website as plans are developed, but some events for October to February are already there.

As things currently stand, we have no permanent co-ordinator, but we are optimistic that we will have one by the new year. In the meantime, Chris Loy will act as the main point of contact.

We intend to hold another planning meeting in about six months, which everyone is welcome to attend, but if you are willing to be involved in any way, whether leading walks, organising social events or doing publicity, please do not hesitate to get in touch by emailing: [email protected]

Look forward to hearing from you soon or seeing you on an event!
