ALL WALES WEEKEND, BWLCH

11 Sep 2018 | South Wales Group

This year's All Wales Weekend was held in the beautiful Black Mountains in the village of Bwlch in Powys.  On arriving on the Friday afternoon, we settled into the bunk house, which proved to be an excellent place to stay.  The planned meal in the pub across the road had taken an unexpected turn earlier in the week when we were informed that the landlord's wife - the pub's cook - was unable to work, as she had fallen off a quadbike and broken her arm in two places.  The landlord however, not to let us down, roped in a friend who valiantly cooked up great amounts of delicious lasagne, chips, garlic bread, and salad for the 13 of us, and huge puddings that covered dinner plates.  It was a great little village pub and we felt very welcome there.  For most, after a few drinks, it was off to bed.

On the Saturday, Huw led a good number of walkers on an eight mile climb to Tor-y-Foel from the picturesque village of Llangynidr.  The weather forecast had not been good all week and sure enough, just as we got to the top of the mountain, we were hit by driving heavy rain and gale force winds.  We were lucky enough to get great views on the way up and down however, including a half naked farmer fixing a fence, which prompted an unplanned break in the walk!, and this proved to be an excellent walk.

The shared meal in the evening in the bunkhouse was a real treat, with an ample, varied supply of both hot and cold food, and numerous desserts.  Alan conducted a quiz, ensuring that the outcome was a draw for both teams, and after a group board game, it was off to bed.

We welcomed some new and some older faces for the walk on the Sunday and 17 people stepped out from the bunkhouse at Bwlch on a seven mile route, which dropped to the valley floor at Cwmdu, and then climbed gradually to the top of Cefn Moel.  Inbetween showers, although Pen-y-Fan was obscured by low cloud, we did observe fantastic views down to the Abergavenny mountains and along to the central Beacons, and Llangorse Lake.

It was then thanks and goodbyes to everyone.  A really good weekend.
