A Sussex Coastal Walk–Hastings to Rye

14 of us set off from Hastings Station in bright sunshine but with a pleasant cooling breeze. The morning was filled with the ups and downs of the hills around Hastings offering good views of the surrounding countryside stretching from Eastbourne to Dungeness. Tasty Blackberries on the bushes were consumed.  Less tasty Sloberries were not although they are excellent for making Gin!  The day was so clear that it was possible to make out the hills of France on the horizon. We passed by the (in)famous  Fairlight Glen –above the nudist beach, some making a note for future visits.

Lunch was held at Pett Level where a few intrepid people had a swim. The afternoon was more relaxed as we strolled on the flat beside the military canal. A short break was held in Winchelsea where some elected to have a pint while others enjoyed exploring this amazing medieval village.

Rye was reached at 5.30 having passed by Camber Castle. After a stroll around Rye the group split up, some electing to catch the train and the remainder finishing off the day with a pint and dinner at the Ypres Castle Inn.
