Wolstonbury Hill, Danny and Hurstpierpoint
A 7.5 mile walk taking in the spectacular views and fresh air from the top Wolstonbury Hill just north of Brighton, the impressive Danny Tudor mansion and passing through the lovely Sussex town of Hurstpierpoint. We will start in little Clayton village to ascend the 150 meters to the top of Wolstonbury Hill. From here you can see the Devil's Dyke, the sea, Brighton, much of the South Downs, and north across the Weald to the North Downs. Burial sites, an Iron Age fort, and many Saxon artefacts have been found here. From there we will descend and the rest of the route is relatively level.
Danny House is a stunning 28 bedroom Tudor mansion, now luxury retirement apartments. At Hurstpierpoint we may pause to admire the St Lawrence Church over lunch before returning to Clayton.
There is also the optional alternative of a shorter 3.5 mile route taking in Wolstonbury Hill and missing out Danny and Hurstpierpoint. The walk leader can provide a map of how to return to the start point.
For anyone wanting refreshments at the end the walk we will finish very close to the agreeable Jack & Jill Inn.
Bring drink for the walk and a packed lunch to eat on the route. Please wear clothes appropriate for the weather and terrain. Parts of the route can get very muddy in places if it has rained. Dogs are welcome if kept on leads whenever near livestock, on roads or if requested by the walk leader.
