Due to national lockdowns in all UK nations, all GOC events are currently cancelled.
We look forward to being able to restart activities once local and national restrictions permit.
** THIS EVENT IS NOW CANCELLED DUE TO THE COVID-19 LOCKDOWN IN ENGLAND AND SUBSEQUENT GOVT ADVICE/RESTRICTIONS. THIS EVENT HAS BEEN RE-SCHEDULED TO NOVEMBER 2021 **
This is an easy 8 mile circular walk across typically Kentish countryside; crossing arable and wide fields approaching the river Medway, flood plains, and disused flooded gravel pits. Hopefully, we will have the opportunity to visit All Saints' Church, Tudeley which is the only church in the world that has all its windows decorated in stained glass designed by the Russian artist, Marc Chagall. The east window at Tudeley is a memorial tribute to Sarah d'Avigdor-Goldsmid who died aged just 21 in a sailing accident off Rye. Sarah was the daughter of Sir Henry and Lady d'Avigdor-Goldsmid; the family then lived at the fine Jacobean house, Somerhill (now a school), which is situated nearby. Chagall was initially only going to design this one window but, on seeing the church at Tudeley, was so enthralled that he went on to design the remaining 11 windows. The chancel windows were finally installed in 1985, the year of Chagall's death at the age of 98 (replacing Victorian glass, now cunningly backlit by a specially designed lightbox installed in the vestry).
BOOKING: Advance booking is required. National Covid regulations limit the group size to 29 people plus the leader and for contact tracing purposes all attendees must be either full GOC members or have a free trial online membership. The event is of course free of charge. You can book on behalf of others as well as yourself. If you have difficulty booking then please contact the West Kent Group Coordinator at [email protected] to do it for you. You will only be permitted to attend a GOC event if you have registered in advance via the website. Thank you!
During the walk attendees should follow social distancing rules at all times and respect that others may have different sensitivities to personal safety.
Terrain / Difficulty
An easy walk on well-defined flat level paths and across fields and farmland which maybe particularly muddy during the winter months.
