A moderate circular 8 mile walk, exploring Werneth Low, a hill on the edge of the Pennines offering panoramic views across Greater Manchester and beyond in clear weather. Remains dating back to the Bronze Age and Roman Occupation have been found.
From our starting point we ascend through Greave to reach the top of Werneth Low. Passing near Hangingbank, the site of some archaeological discoveries, we reach the War Memorial, a lasting monument to the 710 men of Hyde that perished in World War 1.
After stopping at Windy Harbour vantage point, the site of anti-aircraft gun positions during World War 2, we follow a scenic path near Werneth Low Golf Course and then descend through Mortin Clough into Etherow Country Park, one of England's first country parks.
On leaving the Park we walk alongside the River Etherow and then climb through Redbrow Wood before traversing farmland and paths across Romiley Golf Course.
Equipment: walking boots, waterproof jacket and trousers, sun hat, suncream. Trekking pole(s) recommended if normally used.
Dogs: It is essential that dogs are kept on a short lead in the vicinity of livestock and in Etherow Country Park. The owner is responsible for performing any lifting that may be required over stiles.
