Teign valley
STOP PRESS (Posted sat 8 July)
Just a few bits of extra information gleaned on a recce this week.
Car park charge is £3.50 cash for all day parking.
There is a coffee van adjacent to the visitor centre for those arriving early. The proposed lunch stop this time will not be on the riverbank but by the canal where the only available bench seats 5 or 6 so most of us will have to sit on the grass.
Circular 6 mile ramble including sections of the waymarked Templer Way trail. The route begins beside Stover Lake which is always teeming with wildfowl, then through woodland and along quiet roads towards the river Teign and a pleasant stretch of riverside walking leading to the village of Teigngrace.
Return across fields to pickup the towpath of the abandoned Stover canal which was used to transport clay and granite. Interesting relics of the granite tramway to be seen at Ventiford Basin where the stone from Dartmoor quarries was loaded onto canal barges at Ventiford Basin.
Bring a packed lunch for a picnic. Refreshments afterwards at local tearooms.
