  • TerrainA few steep stretches up to a ridge, on some rocky and uneven paths, and another steep climb in the valley on the return leg.

This is a strenuous walk with spectacular views of Talybont Reservoir and the Brecon Beacons.

Initially, the route climbs gently through fields to a high point and then descends to the reservoir dam.  There is then quite a stretch of walking on the flat over the dam and down the east side of the reservoir.  Then the route climbs on a quite rocky and uneven stretch to a part of the Taff Trail, where there will be the opportunity to take a quick break and get a first glimpse of the reservoir below.  From here, the route climbs again to a ridge, on a quite steep and rocky path, with possible wet stretches, but also with intervals of more gradual incline, allowing a pause to catch a breath.  There are some lovely views on this stretch and the path eventually crosses the Bryn Oer Tramway and links up with the Beacons Way.  Weather permitting, we will stop for lunch at the top and enjoy the views across the hills and down into the valley.

The descent is more gradual with more views of the reservoir. The route crosses over the Taff Trail again before going through a forest and coming out onto the floor of the valley, and then crosses the Caerfanell river via a wooden footbridge.  The path then continues down a lane and turns onto a short stretch of road, before taking another steepish climb to a track through the forest on a good, level surface, for about two miles, back to the parking area.

Mae hon yn daith gerdded egnïol gyda golygfeydd godidog o Gronfa Ddŵr Talybont a Bannau Brycheiniog.

I ddechrau, mae'r llwybr yn dringo'n raddol trwy gaeau i bwynt uchel ac yna'n disgyn i argae'r gronfa ddŵr. Yna mae tipyn o gerdded ar y fflat dros yr argae ac i lawr ochr ddwyreiniol y gronfa ddŵr. Yna mae’r llwybr yn dringo ar ddarn eithaf creigiog ac anwastad i ran o Daith Taf, lle bydd cyfle i gymryd hoe sydyn a chael cipolwg cyntaf ar y gronfa ddŵr islaw. O'r fan hon, mae'r llwybr yn dringo eto i grib, ar lwybr eithaf serth a chreigiog, gyda darnau gwlyb posibl, ond hefyd gydag ysbeidiau o oleddf mwy graddol, gan ganiatáu saib i ddal anadl. Mae yna olygfeydd hyfryd ar y darn yma ac yn y diwedd mae’r llwybr yn croesi Tramffordd Bryn Oer ac yn cysylltu â Ffordd y Bannau. Os bydd y tywydd yn caniatáu, byddwn yn aros am ginio ar y brig i fwynhau'r golygfeydd ar draws y bryniau ac i lawr i'r dyffryn.

Mae'r disgyniad yn fwy graddol gyda mwy o olygfeydd o'r gronfa ddŵr. Mae'r llwybr yn croesi Llwybr Taf eto cyn mynd trwy goedwig a dod allan i lawr y dyffryn, ac yna croesi afon Caerfanell ar hyd pont droed bren. Yna mae’r llwybr yn parhau i lawr lôn ac yn troi ar ddarn byr o ffordd, cyn cymryd dringfa serth arall i drac drwy’r goedwig ar wyneb gwastad da, am tua dwy filltir, yn ôl i’r maes parcio.
