Southwater And Horsham Circular Walk - A Journey Through Woodland, Parkland & Historic Landscapes

Join us for a scenic 9-mile circular walk, starting and finishing at Southwater Country Park. This moderate route takes us through ancient woodlands, historic parkland, and open countryside with spectacular bluebell displays in early May. Our walk begins with a peaceful exploration of the park’s lakes and reed beds, where we’ll have the chance to spot great crested grebes, herons, and dragonflies. From here, we head north towards Christ’s Hospital School, one of England’s most historic schools, founded in 1552 by King Edward VI. Its impressive buildings and distinctive blue-uniformed students offer a striking backdrop as we follow footpaths leading towards Horsham Golf Course. As we pass through the golf course, we’ll enjoy open fairways and wooded edges, keeping an eye out for deer and birds of prey that frequent the area. This section offers a mix of open landscapes and shaded woodland before we reach Denne Park, a key highlight of the walk.

Here, we ascend gently through ancient woodland which should be carpeted in vibrant bluebells at this time of year. We may stop for a lunch break at Denne Hill, with its sweeping views, or choose to continue a bit further and enjoy lunch by the River Arun in Horsham. After lunch we'll head south through Chesworth Farm, a site with medieval origins. Once part of a grand estate linked to the Howard family, Chesworth was visited by Queen Elizabeth I and remains a haven for wildlife today. Expect to see grazing sheep, winding riverbanks, and an abundance of birdlife. As we continue south through Newfoundout, a quieter stretch of woodland and farmland, we’ll have one last opportunity to enjoy the bluebells just before we finish, returning to Southwater Country Park.

Please bring a packed lunch and drink to keep you going for the walk. Wear clothes appropriate for the weather and terrain. Some sections may be muddy after rain. Dogs are welcome if kept on leads whenever near livestock, on roads or if requested by the walk leader.
