General information

An easy walk of 6 miles (overall ascent 195 metres).  It starts in Ludlow, crosses the River Teme and heads west, on country lanes and farm tracks to the hamlet of Lady Halton before heading back towards Ludlow.

Our outward stretch skirts the northern edge of Mortimer Forest with magnificent views towards the Shropshire Hills - on a clear day we might see Caer Caradoc and, beyond the majestic outline of Wenlcok Edge, the tip of the Wrekin.

We join the Shropshire Way near Priors Halton and follow this trail back to Ludlow.  At Dinham bridge we will take the Bread Walk at river level along the south bank, crossing back to the town at Ludford Bridge where we can pause and enjoy views of the river on either side.  We re-enter the town up Lower Broad Street which leads us through Broad Gate (the only remaining arched gateway - there were seven! - through the town wall) and then up Broad Street to the Butter Cross.  We can take in the elegant houses which line both sides of the street - a famous feature of Ludlow..

At the Butter Cross, we will take a short detour to skirt the medieval church of St Laurence, past the ancient almshouses to Castle Square.  Here a flourishing market takes place nearly every day of the week.  From here there is an easy descent back to river level and the cars but those who want to linger and enjoy more of the town are welcome to do so.  Lots of history happened here, especially at the Norman Castle (much of which remains standing) and you may enjoy/endure some info-gems as the walk proceeds!
