10 Sep 2022: Dane End
A circular walk of 12 miles (19 km) in the gloriously rural mid-east Herts. Soft and sensuous curves of the Herts countryside unfurl afore us, underneath big sky, enticing us to meander through the fields, nudged by posh homes, one golf course and the occasional church.
Wear sturdy boots or, if the weather has been dry, trainers. The route features footpath and bridleway on field, field-edge, hard-standing and public highway One patch of the route, about 0.5 km, is very uneven ground (poorly maintained livestock fields). There is at least 1.5km of road on the route.
Elevation ranges from 62m to 133m, with the steepest gradients of 12% up and down over distances of less than 1km.
Most of the route is exposed. Woodland is sparse, with thin canopy. On elevations, the wind can be quite strong.
There is one stile on the route.
If you are keen on blackberries, bring a small plastic box with lid. There are likely to be literally billions of blackberries, elderberries and rosehips. Lesser appearance by sloes and damsons. One guest appearence by unripe walnuts.
The optional pub stop is some 7 minutes drive away from the end point.
