Walking weekend on Gower

When Henry suggested last summer that we arrange a joint event  for 2014 with the London based Suit and Tie Society of which he is a member, Neil took up the challenge, planning a weekend of walks on Gower--Saturday and Sunday-- and a meal on the Saturday evening at a popular gay run restaurant in Swansea.

After a lot of hard work in the intervening months by Neil and plenty of liaising, Saturday finally dawned and 28 of us--which included 10 from the London group--assembled in Mumbles, in readiness to catch a local bus to Caswell, to walk back to Mumbles along the coastal path.

The only panic attack I had all weekend was, would 28 of us be able to get on the single decker bus??

The bus duly arrived and (phew!!!) 28 of us managed to board with the driver turning off the engine, whilst he laboriously teased 28 tickets from the machine.

Meanwhile the other people on board remained very patient and soon the bus shuddered back to life and transported us the relatively short distance to Caswell Bay.

We alighted and started meandering along the coastal path towards Langland, pausing to take in the magnificent views and lingering for lunch at Rotherslade.

We eventually returned to Mumbles with some of us going over Mumbles Hill and others taking a flatter route, to meet up again at the popular Verdi's, where ice creams from single cones to knickerbocker glories were sampled in the sun.

That evening the Suit and Tie Society members arrived at the local restaurant in . . . . . . . . . suits and ties!!!!

Our GOC members also scrubbed up and suitably well dressed, mingled, and the conversation flowed, over a very enjoyable and well served, tasty three course meal.

Dispersing to our respective dwellings and bed and breakfast accommodations we made plans to meet the following day for the scheduled walk at Southgate and Three Cliffs Bay.

Sunday turned out to be shorts and t shirt weather too and 18 of us did a figure of eight walk, to Three Cliffs and Pennard Castle in the morning and as some made their weary way homewards, 10 of us (7, yes SEVEN, women and only 3 men!!!!) toured the very beautiful Pwlldu Bay in the afternoon.

The Three Cliffs cafe is particularly renowned for its scrummy cake so to round off a fabulous weekend of walking and socialising we sat outside in the sun, sampling the treats on offer.

We discussed how well the weekend had gone, how everyone had blended so well together and how much everyone had thoroughly enjoyed the glorious Gower and the good company.

There were many, including some of our group, who had never been on Gower before, and almost everyone vowed to return to explore some more of the beautiful coastline.

Maybe the next joint event for us, could be a weekend in London??!!
