Northern Climbers/Adventure Out meet – Borrowdale. 5th – 7th June

Sixteen of us (11 men and 5 women) met in early June at a climbing hut set in a secluded wood near Braithwaite for a weekend of hillwalking, climbing and running, with some of the party taking part in the Borrowdale trail run on the Sunday.

The weather for Saturday was poor and high winds were forecast, making climbing out of the question so we all opted for a mass ascent of Cat Bells, an attractive small hill best viewed from the shores of Derwentwater.  While most of the group descended straight back to the hut after reaching the summit (to save their legs for the run the day after), four of us continued on in the windy conditions to the summits of Maiden Moor, High Spy and Castle Crag.

Sunday was a much better day with many of the group taking part in the trail run, some taking the 13km shorter route and a couple running the full 21km course; Phil and Rich managed to bag two rock climbing routes on Shepard’s Crag (Little Chamonix (VD) and Donkey’s Ears (HS)), with others opting for another hill walk over Ard Crags, Knott Rigg and Causey Pike.
