Christmas 2014 – Aylesham Circular

Well what could Aylesham have to offer for those wanting some post Christmas exercise?  A fabulously sunny and crisp winter’s day walking around one of East Kent’s old collieries and surrounding villages. A nineteen strong band of men (and two doggies) joined to walk the six and a half mile route from Aylesham station - a great turnout! The route passed through the villages of Snowdown – the site of the deepest disused colliery in East Kent. From there we picked up the North Downs Way, leading us through open fields and woodland to our lunch stop at Barfreston. Here we visited the Wrong Turn Micro Pub, were a well earned rest could be taken along with a pint of real ale. We received a homely welcome, warming up by the fire enjoying mince pies and sausage rolls too! Before setting off David (Wright) was able to give the group a wonderfully informative talk on the 12th century church in Barfreston. A real treat to see such piece of history explained with such expert knowledge – well done David!

On the route back via the pretty village of Nonington we were able to view another great sight in Fredville Park; a Majesty Oak Tree thought to be around 1000 years old (Thanks again David). An incredible experience, enhanced by a join of hands and a group dance around the base of the tree (must have been down to the ale!). A short walk to the station ended a perfectly typical GOC walk. Thanks again for supporting my first walk lead, with special thanks to Richard Auckland for shepherding the rear so expertly.
