A walk in west Cornwall

~~A walk in West Cornwall.

Our May walk was a figure of eight ramble centring on the parish of Towednack in West Penwith, in deepest Cornwall.

Thirteen of us assembled in the lay-by at the top of Rosewall Hill just west of St. Ives (the jewel of the Cornish Riviera). Leaders Lee and Terry led the group around country lanes, off road paths, steepish inclines, gullies overgrown with nettles and brier, and fields of long grass. We made friends with sheep, bullocks and an overprotective mare with her foal. We stopped for lunch at Towednack Churchyard and sat on the ancient gravestones to munch our croust (Cornish word for a picnic style meal).

This little church was like something straight out of a Thomas Hardy novel – squat, ancient and rustic – but treasured to bits by its congregation who ensured it gleamed with loving care.

Our walk continued to places with wonderful names – Amalwidden, Skillywadden and Cold Harbour to name but a few. The last bit of off-road brought us back to our cars – all in all around 6 miles. It really was a lovely walk – despite the promise of rain we had a completely dry day but a raw wind which certainly blew away the cobwebs. Gentle warmth in sheltered nooks was most welcome.

Interestingly from many a vantage point we were able to see The English Channel on one side and the Atlantic Ocean on the other – there aren’t many places where you can get a view like that!
