Fourteen Locks and west Newport
This is a circular walk of around 8 miles to the west of Newport taking in Fourteen Locks, which is recognised as an engineering wonder of the Industrial Revolution.
From the start point at Ridgeway, we initially walk to the iron age fort site at Gaer on local pavements and paths. After crossing the fort site, we drop to Tredegar Park through local housing estates, and then walk through the park alongside the river Ebbw and then through its old golf course to Bassaleg. After crossing the River Ebbw at Pye Corner, we cross the A467 at Rogerstone and then climb up through Cefn Wood to the Fourteen Locks Visitor Centre. We then walk the Fourteen Locks section of the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal, partly under and adjacent to the M4, before climbing back up to Ridgeway through Allt-Yr-Yn Woods. Ridgeway, known locally as Little Switzerland, offers excellent views across the Gwent valleys and to Skirrid Mountain (in good weather).
No stiles on the route, and except for the steady climb back up to Ridgeway, there are just a few ups and downs. A moderate walk that some might find a little strenuous in terms of distance. It could be a little muddy in places, but softer shoes or trainers can be worn.
YOU MUST ADD YOUR NAME TO THE ATTENDANCE LIST, IF YOU PLAN TO ATTEND THIS WALK, IN ACCORDANCE WITH CURRENT COVID-19 REGULATIONS.
