Norfolk Cley-next-the-Sea, Wiveton Downs and Blakeney
This is an 8-mile walk in two contrasted halves which starts with a dramatic view of St Margaret's, Cley, one of the finest Norfolk churches. After crossing one of the oldest bridges in England still carrying commercial traffic after 700 years, the route follows a long gentle ascent from Wiveton Church to the top of Wiveton Downs with fine views in all direction from the top of the largest esker in England left behind after the last Ice Age. We then head for Kettle Hill from where we descend to the Norfolk Coast Path and popular Blakeney Quay. We continue round the Fresh grazing Marshes between Blakeney and Cley, an important summer site for marsh and reed-loving birds like lapwings and reed buntings next to the internationally famous Cley Marshes Nature Reserve to the east. There are marvellous views south to the "mainland" across the watery flats and to Blakeney Harbour to the west sheltered by the long shingle spitĀ ending in the dunes of Blakeney Point. We conclude our walk by weaving in and out of the attractive old yards and alleyways (lokes) of Cley's once thriving port as far as its famous windmill before returning to the Village Hall.
